Dermatillomania (SPD) - despite being a severe mental disorder that is not so widely talked about, It is also a disorder that has affected my mundane life, unconsciously, without me even knowing. This compulsive urge to pick on my own skin to the point of injury, obsessive but unconscious, silently, on my own i have dealt with the consequences for years without a notice. Despite its severe nature, to this day, it remains as one of the most under-recognisable mental disorders. Through immense visuals, sound design and metaphorical story-telling, this experimental short film explores the core of the disorder on a personal level.

Approach

Beyond my personal dedication to this film, it was unbearably difficult to find the balance between the intimacy and vulnerability and the metaphorical escape from it all. Presenting a psychological mental disorder into a visually coherent film was a challenging but a rewarding experience. Visually, utilising mostly extreme close ups and intimate shots I believe that I have effectively managed to portray the mental disorder. With the help of sound design, erratic pacing and visual control I was able to establish the unstable nature of disorder. Short, eerily peaceful pauses brought the whole film to life, making it not only about the disorder itself but also about letting it go.
